Frequently Asked Questions
What is an IP address?
An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique numeric identifier assigned to your device on a network. IPv4 uses four numbers (192.168.1.1). IPv6 uses longer hexadecimal addresses. Your public IP is what websites see when you connect.
What is the difference between public and private IP?
Your public IP is assigned by your ISP and is visible to the internet. Your private IP (like 192.168.x.x) is used within your home or office network. Routers translate between them using NAT. This tool shows your public IP.
Why does my IP show a different location?
IP geolocation is approximate, based on ISP registration data. It typically shows your city or region, not your exact address. VPN users see the VPN server's location. Mobile users may see their carrier's data center location.
Can I hide my IP address?
VPNs, proxy servers, and Tor route your traffic through another server, showing that server's IP instead of yours. Each method has different speed, privacy, and security trade-offs. Your ISP can still see that you are using a VPN.
IPv4 vs IPv6 - which am I using?
Dokall shows both if available. IPv4 is still dominant but addresses are exhausted. IPv6 provides vastly more addresses and is increasingly adopted. Many networks run dual-stack with both protocols active.
