Frequently Asked Questions

How is word count calculated?
Words are counted by splitting text on whitespace. Sequences of non-whitespace characters separated by spaces, tabs, or newlines count as one word each. Punctuation attached to a word (like hello,) counts as part of that word.
What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?
Character count with spaces includes every character in your text - letters, numbers, punctuation, and whitespace. Character count without spaces excludes spaces, tabs, and newlines. Social media limits often count with spaces; some academic requirements count without.
How is reading time estimated?
Reading time is calculated at roughly 200-250 words per minute, the average silent reading speed for adults. A 500-word article shows about 2 minutes. Speaking time for presentations is typically slower at 130-150 words per minute.
Is there a character or word limit?
No. Dokall processes text entirely in your browser with no upload and no enforced limit. Very large documents (hundreds of thousands of words) may slow down on older devices, but there is no server-side cap.
Does this count words in languages without spaces?
Languages like Chinese, Japanese, and Thai do not use spaces between words. This tool counts space-separated tokens, so a Chinese paragraph may show as one or few words. For CJK text, character count is usually more meaningful than word count.
